Why CGWA Compliance Matters

Any entity — industrial, commercial, infrastructure, or mining — that extracts groundwater beyond specified limits in notified areas must obtain prior permission from the Central Ground Water Authority under the Environment Protection Act, 1986. This permission is the CGWA NOC. The NOC specifies the permitted extraction quantum, the conditions of use, mandatory monitoring requirements (flowmeters, DWLRs), and the obligation to undertake recharge measures such as rainwater harvesting.Failure to obtain or renew the NOC, or non-compliance with its conditions, can result in notices, fines, and suspension of groundwater extraction — which for industries dependent on borewells means partial or complete shutdown.
